High Performance Computing in Luxembourg

This website is deprecated, the old pages are kept online but you should refer in priority to the new web site hpc.uni.lu and the new technical documentation site hpc-docs.uni.lu

The University of Luxembourg operates since 2007 an High Performance Computing platform which is currently featuring a total of nodes (in practice, computing cores) for a cumulative computing power estimated to TFlops.

The total raw storage capacity shared within the clusters is currently estimated to TB (NFS + Lustre).

The effective usage of this complex platform is not an easy task and requires both talent and system skills to understand the impact of our personal workflow on the global performances of the system.

The UL HPC management team, together with leading computational scientists of the UL and HPC technologists will offer instructions and practical sessions on a variety of topics, including:

  • Access to and interaction with the UL HPC infrastructures
  • HPC challenges, especially as regards data and storage management
  • HPC workflow management
  • HPC Programming and Usage of the main softwares available on the platform (Mathlab, R, MPI etc.)
  • Performance analysis, debugging & profiling
  • Scientific visualization

The aim is to cover basic as well as advanced usage of the platform. Whether you are an HPC newbies or an advanced user, don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn more about the efficient usage of the system.

The first edition of the UL HPC School has taken place on:
May 6th and 7th, 2014, on the Kirchberg campus, the “Salle Paul Feidert”

Program

All sessions will take place at the Kirchberg Campus, mainly in the Paul Feidert Room.

Important You are expected to bring your personal laptop for all sessions since there will be no workstation available on site.

All tutorials proposed as practical sessions are available on GitHub.
The detailed program is available here.

2014 Edition Feedback

Now that the HPC School 2014 took place, we are able to propose a first feedback.

  • 66 participants registered (including 1 external and 1 SnT visitor) distributed as follows:
Institute Number of persons Percentage
FDEF (incl. 4 LSF) 7 10,61 %
FLSHASE 1 1,52 %
FSTC 29 43,94 %
LCSB 17 25,76 %

TOTAL: 66

UL HPC School 2014 Participants Pie Chart

A satisfactory form has been proposed to the participants for each day and the global feedback is very positive. We now seek a yearly event, and possibly a more frequent session targeting only new users.
